Which Chinese Seal Finish Should You Choose?

Choosing a Chinese seal finish is less about finding one universal “best” option and more about deciding how you want the stone to look and feel in daily use. Seal of East’s current design tool lets you compare four named finishes before a digital proof is sent for approval.

What are the four Chinese seal finishes?

On the Design Your Personal Seal page, you can start with a plain, flat-top stone or add a more sculptural direction:

  • Plain: a flat-top finish included in the base configuration.
  • Ruyi: the 如意 option, currently listed as a $20 addition.
  • Beast: the 瑞兽 option, currently listed as a $30 addition.
  • Panda: the 熊猫 option, currently listed as a $40 addition.

These names describe the available finish choices in the live design tool. They are not promises of luck, protection, health benefits, or other outcomes.

Choose by the visual feeling you want

If you prefer a quieter, more minimal object, begin with the plain option and focus on the inscription, stone size, and character style. If you want the top of the seal to carry more visual detail, compare the Ruyi, Beast, and Panda choices in the live preview before requesting your proof.

The design tool also lets you compare red characters, white characters, 2 cm or 2.5 cm sizing, and optional edge text. The final price is confirmed with the proof, while taxes and delivery are calculated at checkout.

See the difference in real Seal of East pieces

Ready-made pieces can help you understand the range of forms before starting a bespoke design. The Amber Glow Seal | Gold-Tone Accent uses warm orange natural stone, a gold-tone side detail, and a sculpted top and side design. The Apricot Cloud Seal | Sculpted Square Design pairs soft apricot and creamy white tones with a sculpted creature in a square form.

These examples are existing product pages, not substitutes for the bespoke proof process. Browse the current Seal of East collection to compare other real stones and sculptural forms.

A simple way to choose

  1. Start with the purpose: personal signature, meaningful gift, or a new chapter.
  2. Choose the character style and inscription direction.
  3. Compare Plain, Ruyi, Beast, or Panda in the live preview.
  4. Select 2 cm or 2.5 cm, then review the digital proof before carving begins.

The most useful finish is the one that makes the name, stone, and form feel coherent together. If you are unsure, share the name, occasion, or feeling with the studio and use the proof to make the final decision.
