Short answer: plan an artist seal as part of the whole composition. It is often considered in relation to the artist’s inscription or signature, but there is no single position for every painting. The format, open space, and existing marks should guide the decision.
Start with the signature
Identify the signature and any written inscription before choosing a spot. A seal placed nearby can read as part of that group; a mark far away may feel separate. Look at the work at its full size, not only in a close crop, and notice where the viewer’s eye already pauses.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art explains that Chinese paintings could continue to evolve as later owners and admirers added inscriptions or seals. Use open space carefully
Look for a margin or open area where a mark can sit without covering important brushwork. Compare its size with the signature, surrounding forms, and paper or silk. A red impression can draw attention, so test a small mark first. If space is tight, reconsider the size or whether another mark belongs there at all.
Plan before stamping
- Mark the proposed position on a copy or practice sheet.
- Check the distance from the signature and edge.
- View the work from normal viewing distance.
- Leave room for existing seals or inscriptions.
These are planning checks, not historical rules. Individual artists and works differ, and a contemporary personal seal does not automatically belong on an antique or another artist’s work.
