A digital copy can make a seal impression easier to organize, compare, or include in a personal archive. The file should preserve what is on the paper rather than disguise the impression. This guide walks through a simple capture and file-keeping workflow.
Prepare a clean impression
Start with a fresh impression on a flat, uncreased sheet. Let it dry before handling so the mark does not smear. Choose a plain background with enough contrast to see the edges. If the impression is uneven, keep the original and make another practice print instead of trying to reconstruct missing lines in an image editor.
Scan or photograph the page
A flatbed scanner can keep a page square and evenly framed. A phone camera is also useful when a scanner is not available. Place the page in even light, avoid glare and hard shadows, and hold the camera parallel to the paper. Check focus at full size before saving the image. These steps help document the paper impression; they do not change how the physical seal prints.
Keep the whole impression in frame
Capture the mark with a small margin of surrounding paper. A second close view can record fine lines, while a wider view preserves the impression’s position on the sheet. If you include a ruler or color reference, keep it beside the impression rather than covering any part of the mark, and label that image as a reference photograph.
Save an untouched master
Keep one original scan or photograph unchanged. Make a separate copy for straightening, cropping, or adjusting brightness for a particular screen or document. Avoid removing small marks from the master: they may be part of the paper, ink, or printing process. Record a useful filename and a short note about the date, paper, and purpose so you can identify the file later.
Use the digital copy with context
A digital impression can be useful for personal records, comparing practice prints, or planning a page layout. It is a reference to a physical impression, not a replacement for it. Before using an image in a publication, product, or other commercial project, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the image and design.
